In 1949 the Congregational Church at its then Boston headquarters set up the Lady Doak College Fund Corporation, a Massachusetts non-profit to support Lady Doak College and the work of Katie Wilcox. Lady Doak College Fund Corporation ceased operating in 1986. Records do not exist that show the reason the Lady Doak College Fund Corporation stopped operating.
In December 2015 Jamie Coats, who lives in Massachusetts visited Lady Doak College and became aware of the College’s need to raise funds for buildings and scholarships. He was given a history of the College and learned about Lady Doak College Fund Corporation. On his return to Boston he asked the law firm Ropes and Gray to help revive Lady Doak College Fund Corporation. Ropes and Gray agreed to do so for free and recommended the creation a successor organization, the Lady Doak College Foundation. The original articles of association and bylaws of the Lady Doak College Fund Corporation were found in the records of the former President of Wellesley College, Margaret Clapp. She was President of Wellesley College 1949-1966 and served as Principal of Lady Doak College. The new articles of association and bylaws of the Lady Doak College Foundation were revised and reviewed in coordination with the Board of the Katie Wilcox Education Association that serves as the Board of Lady Doak College.
The bylaws of the Lady Doak College Foundation calls for seven board members. One is appointed by Katie Wilcox Education Association, one is appointed by CUAC – the Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion and one is appointed by Global Ministries of the United Church of Christ, the successor to the Congregational Church. Four board members are independent members.
The new Lady Doak College Foundation received its 501c3 federal tax exempt designation on May 21st 2019.
The bylaws of both the Lady Doak College Fund Corporation and the new Lady Doak College Foundation sponsor the creation of the Friends of Lady Doak College:
Friends of Lady Doak College. As a part of and under the direction of the Corporation, a group known as the “Friends of Lady Doak College” is established; all Directors of the Corporation shall be members of the “Friends” group to which shall be invited all those who have an interest in the college; and the purpose and the function of the “Friends of Lady Doak College” shall transcend the raising of funds for the support of the College (though this concern continues to be important), and shall extend to sharing the concern of the Governing Council of the College for the recruiting and training of the most able staff, the developing of the most imaginative and the creative program of studies and extra curricular work, and the maintaining of academic achievement in both the faculty and the student body – all with the aim of enabling Lady Doak College to make a more excellent offering to the women of South India.
